"Emerging Collectives"

From the Studio Brief: "We will look at strategies to bring together diverse residents, encourage local economic development and "place-making" through architecture and "bottom-up" urbanism.  The studio will revive the need once provided by Catherine Ferguson Academy through the juxtaposition of two opposite groups: pregnant teenagers in precarious family situations with the need to explore possibilities after high school and entrepreneurs looking for a place to establish a business and foothold within the local community."

PLACEMAKING IN DETROIT

"Strengthening the connection between people and the places they share, Placemaking refers to a collaborative process by which we can shape our public realm in order to maximize shared value.  More than just promoting better urban design, Placemaking facilitates creative patterns of use, paying particular attention to the physical, cultural, and social identities that define a place and support its ongoing evolution."

As an initial project investigating the networks within Detroit our studio discovered and documented placemaking occurring in the different areas of the city.
